The Japanese benchmark for manual rust removal and applying directional satin finishes. Traditional sandpaper can be difficult to control by hand, often leaving uneven scratches or wrapping around corners and ruining crisp edges. The Alfa Mirage® SABITO-RU solves this by impregnating high-quality abrasives directly into a firm, rectangular rubber block. Functioning exactly like a pencil eraser, these blocks allow bench technicians to manually rub away deep rust, stubborn dirt, and oxidation with precise, flat-surface control. They are also the industry standard in watchmaking for applying straight, uniform satin (brushed) finishes to stainless steel.
The SABITO-RU Grit Guide
Select the appropriate grit based on the severity of the oxidation or the desired texture of your satin finish:
-
#46 ROUGH (Blue Text): Maximum aggression. Used for heavy rust removal on neglected bench tools, aggressive stripping of thick oxidation, and applying a very coarse, heavy-grained brushed finish to metals.
-
#120 MEDIUM (White Text): The standard workhorse. Ideal for general-purpose cleaning, removing light tarnish, and applying a standard, uniform satin finish to watch bracelets and jewelry components.
-
#320 FINE (Red Text): The detailing block. Used for final surface smoothing, removing micro-oxidation, and applying a very fine, elegant matte/satin finish to precious metals.
Advantages
-
The "Eraser" Action: As you rub the block against the metal, the rubber matrix slowly wears away, constantly exposing fresh, sharp abrasive grains. This prevents the block from clogging with metal dust (swarf) like traditional sandpaper does.
-
Customizable Shape: The rubber material can be easily sliced with a standard craft knife. Bench jewelers frequently cut these blocks into sharp wedges or thin strips to sand inside tight channels, watch lugs, or custom settings.
-
Wet or Dry Usage: Can be used completely dry for aggressive material removal, or with a few drops of water/honing oil to create a slurry for a smoother, more refined satin finish.
-
Flat-Surface Integrity: The semi-rigid rubber block ensures your sanding pressure is distributed evenly across flat surfaces, preventing the "dishing" or rounding of edges that occurs when using loose abrasive paper and fingers.
