Dense, true-running felt laps engineered for flat surface polishing and edge retention. When preparing metal for a final polish, standard cotton wheels are often too pliable, causing them to round off sharp geometric edges and chamfers. The ORO® Solid Felt Lap Wheel provides a rigid, highly dense substrate that effectively holds cutting compounds while maintaining the strict structural geometry of your workpiece. Available in five specific density grades, these wheels allow bench technicians to execute heavy scratch removal and pre-polishing without compromising the flat surfaces of watch cases, signet rings, and custom hardware.
Density Selection Guide
Selecting the correct hardness is critical for your specific workpiece geometry:
-
Flint Hard & Rock Hard: Maximum density with zero flex. Mandatory for polishing perfectly flat surfaces, sharp angles, and crisp watch case chamfers. Will not contour to the metal. Best paired with aggressive cutting compounds (e.g., #800 to #1500 grit).
-
Hard & Medium: The standard for general-purpose pre-polishing and leveling. Offers aggressive compound retention with a very slight surface yield.
-
Soft: The most forgiving felt option. Provides the cutting power of felt but allows for slight conforming to gently curved surfaces, such as domed rings or rounded knife bolsters.
Advantages
-
Edge Retention: The solid felt structure prevents the wheel from wrapping around the workpiece, ensuring that sharp angles and faceted designs remain perfectly crisp during the heavy cutting phases.
-
Superior Compound Adhesion: Felt naturally grabs and holds onto dry solid compounds (like Tripoli, KOYO, or Alfa Mirage NW series) much more effectively than loose cotton, reducing compound waste and fly-off.
-
Balanced Rotation: Engineered to run true on standard polishing lathes. The wheels feature printed directional arrows to ensure they are mounted in the correct rotational path every time, preventing uneven wear.
-
High-Speed Rating: Safely rated for continuous bench lathe operation up to 3450 RPM.
